Native to China, this perennial plant of the lily family is planted in gardens and sometimes grows wild. The stem is 30-80cm tall. The leaves grow in several tiers of 2-3, linear lanceolate, and 7-15cm long. The tips of the leaves are long and pointed, and the upper leaves curl like tendrils. In April and May, the plant produces several bell-shaped flowers, about 4cm in diameter, at the top of the stem, facing downward. The six pale green tepals have purple net patterns on the inside, so it is also called morel lily. The bulbs have two opposing scales that form a shell shape, and are used for medicinal purposes. The closely related Fritillaria japonica is smaller overall, and the tips of the leaves do not form tendrils. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
