〘Noun〙① Under the Ritsuryo system, military officers of the Left and Right Hyoefu who were of a rank other than the fourth rank. They were responsible for guarding the outer gates of the Imperial Palace and accompanying the Emperor on journeys. The capacity of each was 400 men. They were selected and appointed from the children of gunji of Shoryo rank or higher, or the eldest sons of those of ranks 6th or lower and 8th or higher, over 21 years old, without official duties, physically strong, and skilled in archery and horsemanship.
