Ensemble - Gassodan

...It translates to orchestra or band. It means an instrumental ensemble, but today it is mainly used to refer to an ensemble mainly composed of wind instruments, or a popular or folk ensemble (with various compositions) such as jazz. The English or French word bande originally meant a group, especially a military one, but ensembles have been likened to this since the 17th century, when the French "Les vingt-quatre violons du roi," a string ensemble of 24 men, was called "La grande bande," and the band of Charles II of England, which followed this example, came to be called "The King's Private Band."

…楽団あるいは楽隊と訳す。器楽の合奏団のことであるが，今日ではおもに，管楽器を主体とする合奏団，またはジャズをはじめとする民衆的あるいは民俗的な合奏団(編成はさまざま)を指す語として用いる。　上記の英語あるいはフランス語のbandeは，もともと集団，とくに軍隊のそれを意味していたが，合奏団をこれになぞらえたのは17世紀からで，フランスの〈王の24人の弦楽合奏隊Les vingt‐quatre violons du roi〉が〈グランド･バンドLa grande bande〉と呼ばれ，これにならったイギリスのチャールズ2世の楽団も〈The King’s Private Band〉と呼ばれるようになった。…
