An ethnic group living in the Kali Gandaki River Valley in western Nepal. Characteristically, they are Mongoloid, and their language, along with the neighboring Gurung and Magar peoples, belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family. The population is estimated at about 10,000. Occupying an advantageous location halfway between the Terai Plain and the Tibetan Plateau, they have been involved in trade since ancient times. South of the trading post of Tukche, they make their living by farming. Their society consists of four patrilineal exogamous clans. Their religion is a syncretism of traditional shamanism and Tibetan Buddhism, but in recent times there has been a strong tendency towards Hinduism in some areas, and caste-based ideas are beginning to have an influence. Many of them run teahouses along the roads around Pokhara and Gurkha, and they are known as merchants.
