Studied at the Academy in Düsseldorf, where he was influenced by Carl Friedrich Lessing (1808-80) and others, which opened his eyes to medieval Germany, and he acquired dramatic large-scale composition and careful descriptive ability. The eight frescoes of “The Life of Charlemagne” (four of which were completed by his apprentice due to his illness) for the Aachen City Hall in 1847 fully demonstrate these qualities and abilities. …
