Awa Shrine Ruins - Awa Shrine Ruins
This is one of the water-eroded caves found in various places at the foot of the hills surrounding Awa Shrine in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. Excavations in 1932 uncovered more than 22 human skeletons believed to date to the early Kofun period. The cave is 6m long and up to 2m wide, and is connected to a side cave from the back wall. The skeletons were excavated from the bottom of the black soil that had accumulated inside, but this does not seem to indicate that the skeletons were buried. Among these, 15 adult skeletons show the custom of tooth extraction, and the method used was consistent in removing the second incisor and canine teeth of the upper jaw and all incisors of the lower jaw.
