A merchant who is subordinate to a foreign capitalist and undertakes commercial transactions within his or her own country. In English, it is called compradore or comprador. It is derived from the Portuguese word comprar (to buy), meaning a purchaser. In Japan, it is also written as "kaiben" and is also called "kaiben capital." The Chinese word kaiben originally referred to merchants who supplied goods needed by the imperial court during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Kaiben were found in colonies and semi-colonies, and were a product of imperialist invasions of Asia. They existed in India and Southeast Asia, but their presence in China is more important.
