Pagès - Léon Pagès

Japanese: パジェス - ぱじぇす(英語表記)Léon Pagès
Pagès - Léon Pagès

A French scholar of Japan. He worked as an editor for the magazine Le Univers in Paris, but while in China as an associate of the Beijing embassy, he became interested in the history of Christian missionary work in Japan, and published two volumes of the Collected Letters of Xavier in 1855, as well as a Catalogue of Books Related to Japan (1859). He then published a revised edition of the Japanese Grammar by J. Hoffmann, written by J. D. Curtius, the chief of the Dutch trading post in Japan, and a Japanese Grammar (1861), which he used Christian grammar editions as a reference, as well as the Martyrdom of the Twenty-Six Saints of Japan (1862). He also published a French translation of the Japanese-Portuguese Dictionary published in Nagasaki in 1603 (Keicho 8), the Japanese-French Dictionary (1868), a History of the Japanese Christian Religion and its Historical Materials (1869-70), and other works. These works paved the way for subsequent Japanese studies.
