An ancient Syrian-Palestinian god. Meaning "Lord" in Semitic, he was originally the god of rain, storms, and war. Also known as Adad or Hadad. Like Adonis and Dumuzi, he embodied the death and resurrection of grain, and was widely worshipped along with his spouse Anath or Astarte. It is this nature of the god that is criticized in the Old Testament. Related articles Adad | Canaan | Dagan | Bale Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
