A term in Japanese music. It is used in a variety of ways, both broadly and narrowly, but it has in common the meaning of "reception/mixing." (1) A term used in Noh and Kyogen. It can be used in a wide variety of ways, including hayashi, shosaku, and kyogen, but it is most often used in relation to hayashi. (a) A technique for playing the flute. The flute is played to its own rhythm, separate from the rhythm of the chants and percussion instruments. When the flute is played during chants, it is always called ashirai. In a performance of hayashi alone, it can be ashirai or it can be played in sync with the rhythm of the percussion instruments. (b) A technique for playing percussion instruments.
