Winged ant (Haari)

Japanese: 羽アリ(羽蟻) - はあり（英語表記）winged ant

Male and female ants have two pairs of membranous wings, and the reproductive individuals are called winged ants. Generally, when insects take to the air to mate, this is called a nuptial flight, which for Japanese ants often takes place between late April and early September, but the period and time vary depending on the species. Winged ants, such as those of the Scarabaeidae species, produce large numbers of them, swarming around lights and causing problems for public transport and store operations, and can even get mixed into products at factories. Winged termites are also sometimes called winged ants.

アリの雌雄で，2対の膜質の翅を備え，生殖を行う個体を羽アリという。一般に昆虫が交尾のため空中に飛び立つことを婚姻飛行(結婚飛行)といい，日本産のアリ類では4月下旬から9月上旬の間に行われるものが多いが，その時期や時刻は種類によって異なる。大量に羽アリが発生するケアリ類などは灯火に群がり，交通機関の運転，商店の営業などに支障を生じ，工場で製品に混入することもある。なお，シロアリ類の有翅のものも羽アリということがある。
