Kaga Three Temples

...In 888 (Chokyo 2), an uprising broke out against the military rice tax imposed by the Shugo Togashi Masachika, and tens of thousands of rebels, mainly from Kaga, Noto, Etchu, and Echizen, attacked Masachika's Takao Castle, killed him, and installed Yasutaka Togashi, a member of a branch of the Togashi family, as Shugo. This was called "Togashi, the peasants' successor" or "The peasants' possession of the country," and led to the creation of a "sectarian territory" in Kaga, controlled by temples of the Renyo sect, such as the three Kaga temples (Hasaya Shoko-dera, Wakamatsu Honsen-dera, and Yamada Kokyo-dera), and by local lords who had become followers, all of whom had the backing of peasants. Prior to this, in 1481, a dispute arose between peasants and the local lord Ishiguro Mitsuyoshi in Takase Manor, a manor owned by Todaiji Temple, over the issue of annual tax payments, and an Ikko Ikki uprising, centered around Zuisen-ji Temple in Inami, destroyed the Ishiguro clan, and established control over western Ecchu by its followers.

…やがて88年(長享2)には，守護富樫政親の兵粮米賦課に反対する一揆がおこり，加賀，能登，越中，越前の門徒を中心とする一揆衆数万は，政親の高尾城を攻め政親以下を殺して，別家の富樫泰高を守護に推戴した。これは〈百姓トリ立テ富樫〉とか〈百姓ノ持チタル国ノヤウ〉などといわれ，農民勢力を背景にした加賀三ヵ寺(波佐谷松岡寺，若松本泉寺，山田光教寺)などの蓮如一門の寺院や門徒化した国人などの支配する加賀の〈門徒領国〉が実現した。　これに先んじて，1481年東大寺領越中国高瀬荘では年貢問題で百姓と在地領主の石黒光義が争い，井波の瑞泉寺などを中心とする一向一揆が蜂起して石黒氏を滅ぼし，越中西部に門徒の支配権を確立した。…
