A general term for insects belonging to the order Siphonaptera. Most of them are tiny, less than 4 mm long, and brown in color. They are vertically flat, and many have well-developed hind legs that allow them to jump. They have no wings at all. They undergo complete metamorphosis. Their generation varies depending on the season, but generally lasts about one month. The larvae are milky white, maggot-like, and mature larvae spin cocoons and pupate. Both male and female adults parasitize between the fur of mammals and suck blood through the skin. They are the newest of all insects, and are said to have differentiated and developed from a lower group of Diptera after the appearance of mammals. Different types of fleas parasitize different types of mammals, but they do not parasitize bats or monkeys. Not only human fleas, but also fleas that parasitize mice can suck blood from humans, and the Cheops rat flea in particular is known to transmit the plague. The first step in prevention is to clean under the floor and tatami mats.

ノミ目（隠翅(いんし)目）に属する昆虫の総称。体長4mm以下の微小種が多く，褐色。縦に扁平で，後肢はよく発達して跳躍するものが多い。翅は退化して全くない。完全変態。一世代は季節によって異なるが，一般に約１ヵ月内外。幼虫は乳白色の蛆(うじ)状で，老熟幼虫は繭を作って蛹化(ようか)する。成虫は雌雄ともに哺乳(ほにゅう)類の皮毛の間に寄生し，皮膚から吸血する。昆虫の中では系統上最も新しく，哺乳類の出現以後に双翅目中の下等な一群から分化し，発展したといわれる。哺乳類の種類によってそれぞれ異なった種類のノミが寄生するが，コウモリ類やサル類などには寄生しない。ヒトノミだけでなくネズミに寄生するノミ類も人間を吸血することがあり，特にケオプスネズミノミはペストを媒介するので有名。防除は床下や畳の下の清掃が第一。
