Around 1707-84
A legendary figure of the 18th century who remains shrouded in mystery to this day. His real name is unknown. He was a Portuguese Jew, and some say he was the son of the widow of King Carlos II of Spain. What is certain is that for about 10 years from around 1750, his name was widely known, mainly in France, and Voltaire and Casanova also mentioned this mysterious figure. He frequented the court of Louis XV, gained the trust of Madame de Pompadour, and left a mysterious mark on the social circles of the time. He claimed to have lived for over 2,000 years, and there were rumors that he was an "immortal man." In fact, he reminisced about various events in European history dating back to the pre-Christian era, astonishing salon attendants.

今日なお謎につつまれている18世紀の伝説的人物。本名不詳。ユダヤ系ポルトガル人,一説にはスペイン国王カルロス2世未亡人の子ともいわれる。1750年ごろからほぼ10年間,おもにフランスでその名が広く知られていたことだけは確かで,ボルテールやカサノーバらも,この怪人物に言及している。ルイ15世の宮廷に出入りし,ポンパドゥール夫人の信任を得て,当時の社交界に不可思議な足跡を残した。2000年以上生きつづけていると自称し,〈不死の人〉とのうわさが流れていたが,事実,紀元前からのヨーロッパ史上の諸事件の思い出を語り,サロン人士を驚嘆させたらしい。
