A former town in Kikuchi County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. The central part is a lowland with the Kikuchi River flowing through it, and produces high-quality Kikuchi rice in abundance. The surrounding plateaus produce vegetables, tea, and tobacco leaves. Livestock is also raised here. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Kikuchi City along with Shisui Town and Asahi Village in Kikuchi County. 20.50 km2 . 5,992 people (2003).
