Cape Colony - Cape Shokuminchi (English spelling) Cape Colony

Cape Colony - Cape Shokuminchi (English spelling) Cape Colony
The name of the former British colony before it was integrated into the Union of South Africa in 1910. The former Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa inherited the territory of this colony as its administrative territory. It began in 1652 when the Dutch East India Company established a colony on the shores of Table Bay as a relay base to Batavia (Jakarta). After that, many Dutch people settled there, and after the abolition of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, French Huguenots also migrated there, and in the 18th century, the descendants of Dutch immigrant farmers called Boers advanced into the inland areas and engaged in livestock farming. At the end of the 18th century, they advanced to the Orange River in the north and the Great Fish River in the east. After the British fleet occupied the Cape in 1795, it was occupied by Britain again in 1806, and officially became a British territory at the Congress of Vienna in 1814. After 1835, the Boers, who were rebelling against Britain, crossed the Orange River in a large migration (→Great Trek). In 1852, the Transvaal Republic was established, and in 1854, the Orange Free State became independent. By this time, the Kafir Wars had ended, and the area stretching from the Orange River in the north to the area between the Great Fish River and the Kei River in the east had become the territory of the Cape Colony, and in 1880 Griqualand West, north of the Orange River, was also annexed. When the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910, it became one of its provinces, along with the Colonies of Natal, Transvaal and Orange River.
