Selim [I] - Selim
The ninth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1512-1520). He was called "the Cruel One" because of his violent temper. In 1514, he invaded the Safavid Empire of Iran, in 1516 he captured Syria, and in 1517 he destroyed the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt.
