Politiques

…an alliance of radical Catholics formed in France in the late 16th century toward the end of the Religious Wars (the Religious Wars). As armed conflict between the old and new factions continued, a third faction, the Politiques, formed around the king, centered on moderate Catholics who sought to restore peace by strengthening royal authority, and began to show a tendency toward religious tolerance. On the other hand, orthodox Catholics who advocated the eradication of heresy issued a declaration in 1576 in Peronne, northern France, and formed the alliance, with Henry, Duke of Guise, as its leader. After that, their activities were temporarily suspended due to Henry III's appeasement measures, but when the death of the king's younger brother Francois in 1584 raised the possibility of the Protestant Henry of Navarre (later Henry IV) taking the throne, they were thoroughly opposed to this, and, with financial and military support from Spain through the Joinville Agreement at the end of the same year, they began to use force to oppress Protestants nationwide.

…16世紀後半のフランスで，宗教戦争(ユグノー戦争)末期に結成された過激派カトリックの同盟。新旧両派の武力抗争が続く中で，国王の周辺に，王権の強化による平和の回復を目指す穏健派カトリックを中心とした第三の党派〈ポリティーク派Politiques〉が形成され，宗教的寛容の傾向を示し始めたのに対し，異端の撲滅を主張する正統派カトリックが，1576年北フランスのペロンヌにおいて宣言を発し結成した同盟で，ギーズ公アンリを首領と仰いだ。その後，アンリ3世の懐柔策により一時活動が中断されるが，84年王弟フランソアの死により，プロテスタントのアンリ･ド･ナバール(のちのアンリ4世)が王位につく可能性が生ずると，これに徹底的に反対し，同年末のジョアンビル協定によりスペインの財政的･軍事的支援をえて，全国的にプロテスタントに対する武力弾圧に乗り出した。…
