…an alliance of radical Catholics formed in France in the late 16th century toward the end of the Religious Wars (the Religious Wars). As armed conflict between the old and new factions continued, a third faction, the Politiques, formed around the king, centered on moderate Catholics who sought to restore peace by strengthening royal authority, and began to show a tendency toward religious tolerance. On the other hand, orthodox Catholics who advocated the eradication of heresy issued a declaration in 1576 in Peronne, northern France, and formed the alliance, with Henry, Duke of Guise, as its leader. After that, their activities were temporarily suspended due to Henry III's appeasement measures, but when the death of the king's younger brother Francois in 1584 raised the possibility of the Protestant Henry of Navarre (later Henry IV) taking the throne, they were thoroughly opposed to this, and, with financial and military support from Spain through the Joinville Agreement at the end of the same year, they began to use force to oppress Protestants nationwide. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "Politiques" are listed below.
