A region in the northeast of England, United Kingdom. It is bounded in the north by the River Tees and in the south by the River Humber. The Pennine foothills in the west produce coal (Doncaster, etc.), and industries such as wool (Leeds) and steel (Sheffield) are thriving. The central part is the fertile plain of the River Ouse, where agriculture and livestock farming are carried out. The steel industry in Middlesbrough, which developed against the backdrop of iron ore production in the Cleveland Hills in the northeast, is also important. It was once the largest county in England as a single county, but in the 1974 administrative division reform it was divided and reorganized into North Yorkshire, part of Cleveland, Humberside, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire. Together they cover an area of 6,123 km2 and have a population of 3,931,900 (1991). → Related article United Kingdom Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
