It is the largest glacier in Norway and Europe, located northeast of Sognefjord on the west coast at 61°20'-62°N. It is 10-15 km wide, 100 km long, and has an area of 1150 km2. Its highest point is 1953 m above sea level, and several pinnacles protrude above the ice sheet. Numerous valley glaciers flow down to the north and south, and one of them, Nigårdsbreen, is the best studied and has retreated by 1 km since 1930. The period of greatest advance was in 1945. Many hiking trails have been built on the ice sheet, and the beautiful rapids have made it a famous tourist destination. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
