Year of death: 5 February 1804 (16 March 1804) Year of birth: May 13, 15 of the Kyoho era (June 27, 1730) A Confucian scholar in the mid-Edo period. Born in Osaka. His given name was Sekizen, his pen name was Shikei, and he was commonly known as Zenta. He was known by the names Takeyama Koji, Doguanzi, Cho'o, and Setsu'o. He was the eldest son of Nakai Ken'an Haya. His posthumous name was Fumie. His ancestors followed Maeda Gen'i and Kuroda Josui, and his great-grandfather served the Wakisaka clan as a doctor before moving to Tatsuno in Banshu (Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture). He had a younger brother, Riken, two years younger than him. His fourth son, Shoen, and seventh son, Sekika, continued the school. In the year that Takeyama was born, Miyake Seki'an, the first head of Kaitokudo, passed away, and his father, Ken'an, became the second head of the school. He became passionate about learning from the age of about 10, and in 1743 (Kanpo 3), he studied under Goi Ranshu, his father's close friend and assistant professor at the school. In 1758, his father died, and according to his will, Miyake Seki'an's son Shunro became the third head of the school, with Takeyama taking charge of school affairs as the trustee. From the autumn of 1782, he was in charge of the morning lectures on the 2nd and 7th, and after Ranshu's death the following year, he also took on the role of professor. In 1782, at the age of 53, after Shunro's death, he became the fourth head of the school, and advocated Neo-Confucianism, greatly inspiring the school's style. With the help of his younger brother Riken, the school reached its peak and had many followers. In 1795, Matsudaira Sadanobu, who was inspecting Osaka, questioned him about current affairs. In 1792, Kaitokudo burned down, but efforts were made to restore it, and it was rebuilt in 1795. The following year, he handed over the role of trustee to his eldest son, Shoen. Chikuzan was a strong man with a wealth of insight into the world and economics. He followed Cheng-Zhu (Song school) as his school of learning, but was also flexible enough not to reject Lu Wang (Yangming school), and respected both classic texts. He was skilled in poetry and prose, and had elegant friendships with the literati of the Kontonsha. His grave is at Seiganji Temple in Uehonmachi, Osaka. <Works> "Shirucho", "Hicho", "Touzai Yuuki", "Kusakagi Kigen", "Ichishi", "Den'inshu", "Chikuzan Kokujito" <References> Nishimura Tokihiko, "Kaitokudo Ko" (reprint, 1984), Kaji Nobuyuki et al., "Nakai Chikuzan, Nakai Riken" (Norihisa Mizuta) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
