A former town in Kanzaki County, central Shiga Prefecture. Facing Lake Biwa, it is a fertile rice paddy region occupying the lower basin of the Aichi River. Modern mechanized agriculture is practiced on the reclaimed land of Lake Dainakanoko. The city center is near Notogawa Station. There are many textile-related factories, and hemp products and blinds are local specialties. The Tokaido Main Line runs through the town. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Gamo Town, Gamo County, and Higashiomi City. 31.12 km2 . Population: 22,664 (2003). 滋賀県中部,神崎(かんざき)郡の旧町。琵琶湖に臨み,愛知(えち)川下流域を占める肥沃な水田地帯。大中之湖(だいなかのこ)干拓地では近代的な機械化農業が営まれている。中心市街は能登川駅付近。繊維関係の工場が多く,麻製品やすだれを特産する。東海道本線が通じる。1993年に琵琶湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2006年1月蒲生郡蒲生町と東近江市へ編入。31.12km2。2万2664人(2003)。
