A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. The stems reach a height of 1 meter. The stem leaves are stalked and alternate in 2-3 pieces, the leaf blade is palmately divided into 7-9 lobes, and the lobes are sometimes further divided into middle lobes. The upper leaves have petioles that attach to the bottom, while the lower leaves have petioles that attach like shields. The name "Yaburegasa" comes from the fact that it resembles a torn umbrella. From July to September, a large panicle is produced at the top of the stem, and many flower heads are produced. The flower heads consist of about 10 white tubular flowers. The involucre is pale greenish white and tubular, with 5 involucre segments. The seedlings inside the seeds have only one circular cotyledon, making this a very unique species. It grows under forests in mountainous areas, and is distributed from Honshu to Kyushu and the Korean peninsula. The young shoots are edible.
