Upper Egypt

A geographical and cultural division of Egypt that refers to the Nile River Valley south of 30° north latitude. It is used in contrast to Lower Egypt, which lies north of 30° north latitude and is in the delta region. Towards the end of the 4th millennium BC, the kingdom of Upper Egypt emerged by unifying many tribal nations, forming a separate state from Lower Egypt, but around 3000 BC, the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt was achieved when Lower Egypt conquered Upper Egypt. It is said that this was under the leadership of King Menes. From then on, Egyptian kings were called "kings of Upper and Lower Egypt."

エジプトの北緯 30°以南のナイル川河谷をさす地理的，文化的区分。北緯 30°以北，デルタ地帯の下エジプトと対比して用いられる。前4千年紀末頃，多数の部族国家を統一して上エジプト王国が出現し，下エジプトと別個の国家を形成したが，前 3000年頃下エジプトの上エジプトに対する制覇という形で上下エジプトの統一が実現した。メネス王によると言い伝えられている。以後エジプト王は「上下エジプトの王」と称された。
