...Microtubule structures are thus related to cell morphology linked to the cell cycle. Furthermore, flagella and cilia, which are widely found in eukaryotic cells, are made up of microtubules, and the basal body at their base is a self-replicating system with the same structure as the centrioles. From the standpoint of the endosymbiotic theory, this leads to the hypothesis that flagella and cilia with basal bodies and centrioles were originally spirochetes that lived symbiotically in primitive eukaryotic cells.
