motor glider

...an aircraft with fixed wings like an airplane, but without any propulsion power, that uses updrafts to ascend and glide long distances. An aircraft with a small engine and thrusters that can take off and ascend under its own power, then shuts off the engine in mid-air to glide, is called a motor glider.
[Principle of gliding]
An aircraft with fixed wings can stay in the air by using the aerodynamic forces acting on the wings as it moves forward. Of these aerodynamic forces, the force acting perpendicular to the direction of travel is called lift, and the force acting backward, parallel to the direction of travel, is called drag.
