A sharebon (Japanese comedy book). One volume. Written by Umebori Kokuga. Illustrations by Sekka. Published in 1798 (Kansei 10). The title of the book is derived from the preface, which reads, "The excesses of a playboy are as if they cannot compare to the gentleness of an ugly man," and is meant to depict the two strands of excess and sincerity in the pleasure quarters. Divided into two parts, "Summer Bed" is about a pretentious and brazen playboy who is eventually rejected by a prostitute, and "Winter Bed" is about a middle-aged, ugly man named Bunri who wins the heart of a familiar prostitute, Hitoe, whom he has hated for three years, because of his sincerity, and they become close. Unlike the conventional sharebon that depicted relationships, this work depicts the triumph of sincerity in the pleasure quarters, and determined the style of subsequent sharebon. The content of "Summer Bed" is completed in the second part, "Habits of the Red Light District" (1799), and the third part, "The Ordinary Days" (1800).
