A weekly magazine founded in Shanghai in 1850 (the 30th year of the Daoguang era) by the British H. Shearman. Its Chinese name was Beihua Jie Bao. North China (North China) referred to the area around Shanghai, the northernmost open port, as seen by the British who based themselves in Hong Kong after the Opium Wars. It later became a supplement to the North China Daily News (Zi Lin Xi Bao) (1864-1949), and both ceased publication in 1949. Both were positioned as organ magazines of the British Bureau of Works, and the contents of their reports, including economic articles, were highly reliable.
