A perennial plant of the lily family (APG classification: Liliaceae). The stem is thick, upright, and 1-1.5 meters tall. The leaves are broadly elliptical, stalkless, and 15-30 cm long. In July and August, the panicles produce numerous flowers in a large cluster. There are six perianths, each about 2 cm across and 1.2-1.5 cm long. There are six stamens, each shorter than the perianth. There are three short styles that bend outward. The fruit is a capsule with three chambers. The name comes from the fact that the flowers resemble plums and the leaves resemble Chinese orchids. It is found in Hokkaido, Kyushu, northeastern China, Ussuri, and the Kamchatka Peninsula. It grows in moist grasslands from low to high mountain zones. The closely related species, Kobaikeisou, is very similar to this species, but is smaller overall, with stamens longer than the perianth and a style that does not bend. It grows in the grasslands of deep and alpine mountains north of the Chubu region.
