Australian politician. He was active in central politics from the 1930s, serving as Attorney General and Prime Minister. In 1941 he left the government and founded the Liberal Party, becoming its leader. As Prime Minister from 1949 to 1966, he promoted a policy of rapprochement with the United States and collective security, and signed the ANZUS Treaty.
