Casting and forging industry

Japanese: 鋳鍛工業 - ちゅうたんこうぎょう

This refers to the business of melting steel and pouring it into a mold to make products (casting), and then applying pressure to the cast steel block with a press or hammer to make products (forging). Because it is an industry, it refers to modern manufacturing methods using machines, but in pre-industrial times, weapons and tools such as swords were made by hand using molds and hammers. Because casting uses molds to make products of custom dimensions, it is suitable for products with complex shapes, but is not suitable for mass production. Cast steel is mainly used as a base material for machines.

鋼を溶かして鋳型に注いで製品を作ったり(鋳造)，さらに鋳造された鋼塊にプレスやハンマーで圧力を加えて製品を作る(鍛造)事業をいう。工業であるから機械を用いた近代的な製造方法によるものを指すが，工業化以前の時代には人手によって鋳型やハンマーを使い，刀等の武器や道具が作られた。鋳造は鋳型で注文どおりの寸法の製品を作るものだから，複雑な形状の製品に適しているが，量産には向かない。鋳鋼は主として機械用の素形材として使われる。
