A state in the Midwestern United States. Abbreviated as N.Dak. or ND. Joined the Union in 1889, it was the 39th state. Area is 183,034 km2 , population 640,000 (1996). State capital is Bismarck, largest city is Fargo. The southwestern part of the state was acquired by the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, while the remaining northeastern part bordering Canada became part of the United States through a treaty in 1818. Dakota means "friend" in the Siouan language. A state dominated by prairies with almost no mountains, the Missouri River flows from the west to the south of the state.
