This is a perennial plant of the Liliaceae family endemic to Japan, with only one genus and one species, and grows only in the serpentine areas of Mt. Tanigawa and Mt. Shibutsu in Gunma Prefecture, and Toikanbetsu in the upper reaches of the Teshio River in Hokkaido (illustration). It belongs to the subfamily Liliaceae, which has the most primitive characteristics of the Liliaceae family, and is an interesting plant from a phylogenetic perspective. Its Japanese name is derived from Oze (Mt. Shibutsu), where it was discovered. It has a long underground stem and actively reproduces vegetatively. The leaves grow in clusters from the branches of the underground stem, with linear blades that are folded at the midrib like the leaves of an iris.
