A federal territory in northern Australia, also known as the Northern Territory or Northern Region. It has an area of 1,346,200 km2 and a population of 178,000 (1996). Aboriginal people make up about one-quarter of the population. Its capital is Darwin. Its main industries are livestock farming and mining. Livestock farming is centered on beef cattle raising, which developed especially after World War II with investment in roads and meat processing facilities. Its main mineral products are bauxite and alumina in Gove, manganese ore on Groote Eylandt, and copper ore at Tennant Creek, and there is a large uranium deposit in the Alligator River area east of Darwin.
