A city in north-central Nigeria, located about 75 km north-northeast of Kaduna. Founded in the 16th century as the capital of a Hausa kingdom. The old city is surrounded by a 24 km wall and is inhabited by the Hausa and Fulani peoples, while outside of that is the new city built by the British during the colonial period. A junction of railways and roads, it is the center of the distribution and processing of cotton, groundnuts, tobacco, millet, guinea corn, leather, etc. In addition to traditional industries such as cotton ginning, leather tanning, cotton weaving, and dyeing, there are factories for railway repair, tobacco, and automobile assembly. There are also many educational and cultural facilities. Population: 334,700 (1991 estimate).
