He gained great popularity as a satirical cartoonist, and produced masterpieces such as Mœurs administratives (1828) and Grisettes (29). As a playwright, he made his debut with Les Mendiants (29), a popular comedy. He excelled in light, sharp-tongued works, and gained fame with Grandeur et décadence de M. Joseph Prudhomme (53, which was revised and completed as Mémoires de M. Prudhomme (57)), in which he created the quintessential bourgeois snob Joseph Prudhomme. His other works include Scènes de la ville et de la campagne (41) and La Religion des imbéciles (62).
