edaphology

...A branch of natural science that studies soil. It is divided into edaphology (agricultural or applied soil science), which emphasizes the view of soil as a plant medium from an agricultural and forestry perspective, and pedology (soil formation and taxonomy), which understands soil from the formation process as an independent natural substance that covers the earth's surface. From the perspective of edaphology, the main issues are elucidating the dependence of plants on the soil chemistry, soil physical properties, and soil biology for agricultural, grassland, forest, and other soils, and investigating methods of managing and improving soil for plant production.
