A mountain range in central Africa, on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). It is located just north of the equator. It is a tilted massif along the African Rift Valley, and is the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Africa. It has many high peaks with glaciers and perpetual snow, and Mount Stanley, the highest of the six mountain ranges, is a twin peak of Margherita (5,110 meters) and Alexandra (5,091 meters). The foothills are covered with tropical rainforest, and gorillas and elephants live there. It is always shrouded in mist, giving it a mysterious quality, and there are many legends about it. It was marked on Ptolemy's world map as the "Mountains of the Moon" and was long thought to be the source of the Nile, but there were many mysteries about it until explorer Stanley confirmed it in 1889. In 1906, the Italian Abruzzi Duke's party succeeded in the first successful ascent. It is considered a sacred mountain by the nearby Bakonjo people.
