A representative high-end evening newspaper in modern France. It was founded on December 18, 1944 (the date was the 19th) as the successor to the pro-German collaboration paper Le Temps, taking over the paper's building and other facilities. The central figure in its founding was Hubert Beuve-Méry (1902-89), who had been Le Temps' Prague correspondent since 1934. It was de Gaulle who chose him to be in charge, with the intention of creating a newspaper for the government. However, Beuve-Méry, who believed in "freedom of speech," instead took a position critical of the Fourth Republic. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
