This 1972 film by director Werner Herzog (1942- ) is said to be the monument of the New German Cinema that emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s. In films such as The Feast of the Dwarfs (1970) and The Mysteries of Kaspar Hauser (1974), Herzog depicted the resistance and madness of alienated humans, in films such as Mirage (1968) and Heart of Glass (1976), the bizarre primitive landscapes of the earth filled with premonitions of the world's end, and in films such as The Vital Signs (1967) and The Wonderful Adventures of Stroszek (1977), Herzog portrayed the despair of Western civilization and the collapse of humanity. In this film, shot entirely on location in the Amazon basin, surrounded by virgin forest, Herzog depicts the extreme physical and mental conditions of humans who rush forward as if fascinated by an unknown catastrophe.
