The Lord of the Rings

A full-length novel written by Tolkien, a British scholar of medieval languages ​​and literature. It consists of three parts: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers , and The Return of the King. It was written between 1937 and 1949, and published between 1954 and 1955. In the previous work, The Hobbit (1937), a young Hobbit (a small, gentle race distantly related to humans) named Bilbo obtains a magic ring, which is then inherited by Frodo, a member of the Hobbit clan. However, upon discovering that the ring holds a terrible power, Frodo and his companions set out on a journey to throw the ring into a mountain of fire. With the help of the wizard Gandalf, elves, and humans, a long battle ensues between the forces of evil, but they barely manage to accomplish their goal. This epic fantasy, which makes use of many stories from the Middle Ages, became explosively popular among young people in the 1960s. In 2001, the first part of the trilogy was made into a film (Japanese title: The Lord of the Rings) by director Peter Jackson (1961- ), and the entire trilogy was subsequently made into a film by the same director, with The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in 2002 and The Return of the King in 2003. The Return of the King won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, tying the record for the most awards won by a film.

イギリスの中世語学者で文学者トールキン作の長編物語。『指輪の契り』The Fellowship of the Ring、『二つの塔』The Two Towers、『王の帰還』The Return of the Kingの三部からなり、1937年から1949年にかけて執筆、1954年から1955年に出版された。前作『ホビット』The Hobbit（1937／邦訳名『ホビットの冒険』）で、ホビット族（人類の遠縁にあたる、小柄で穏和な種族）ビルボが手に入れた魔法の指輪を、一族の若者フロドが受け継ぐ。だが、これが恐るべき力を秘めていることがわかり、フロドは仲間とともに、指輪を火の山に棄(す)てるための旅に出る。魔法使いのガンダルフやエルフ、また人間などに助けられ、悪の勢力との間に長い戦いが続くが、かろうじて目的は遂げられる。中世の数々の物語を生かしたこの壮大なファンタジーは、1960年代になって若者たちの間で爆発的な人気を得た。2001年ピーター・ジャクソンPeter Jackson（1961―　）の監督により三部作の第一部が映画化（邦題『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』）、その後も同監督により2002年『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング／二つの塔』、2003年『同／王の帰還』と三部作すべてが映画化された。『王の帰還』ではアカデミー最優秀作品賞を含む11部門を受賞、最多部門受賞作のタイ記録であった。
