Originally a Latin word meaning image. It is a concept used by Jung, and is said to have been inspired by Spitteler's novel Imago (1906). It refers to an unconscious character archetype that directs the way an individual perceives others. It is thought to be formed based on an individual's real and imaginary experiences in early childhood in relationships with their family. An individual sees others based on their imago. It was an early concept of Jung's, and he did not use it much later. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
