Pilgrimage to Kumano - Kumano-mude

Japanese:
Pilgrimage to Kumano - Kumano-mude
Pilgrimages to the Kumano Sanzan (three shrines of Kumano) based on Kumano faith. From Emperor Uda to Emperor Kameyama, the Imperial Court made about 100 visits, with Goshirakawa making 34 visits and Gotoba making 28 visits being particularly famous. However, there were no imperial visits. In the Kamakura period, this practice spread rapidly among warriors and ordinary people, and the Kii and Ise routes were opened. The Kii route was a round trip of 170 ri from Kyoto, taking about a month, and pilgrims were required to undergo strict abstinence and purification, dressed as mountain ascetics. On the way, they held poetry contests at various Oji shrines (the 99 Oji shrines), which were subordinate shrines of the Kumano shrines (Kumano Kaishi). During the Muromachi period, this practice declined due to the popularity of pilgrimages to Ise, but there were still a considerable number of pilgrims until the early Edo period.
