Palaemonidae, order Decapoda, class Malacostraca. Large freshwater shrimp, reaching a body length of over 25cm, and the largest species in the Palaemonidae family. The upper edge of the rostrum has 11-13 teeth (2-3 on the cephalothorax), and 10-11 teeth on the lower edge. The second thoracic leg of the male is long and densely covered with spines, and the upper edge of the movable digits has soft hairs. The body is uniformly dull gray-green, but the second thoracic leg is tinged with blue. It inhabits the middle and lower reaches of large rivers from Taiwan through Southeast Asia to India. It is an important food species throughout its distribution range, and is especially cultivated on a large scale in Thailand. (→Crustacea, Decapoda, Arthropods, Malacostraca)
