An insect of the Pyrochroidae family (illustration) in the order Coleoptera. Body length is 12-17 mm. It is found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, as well as the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. Except for Hokkaido and northeastern Honshu, it mainly lives in mountain forests. It appears from around May and can be found on leaves and fallen trees in forests during the summer. There are over 100 species of Pyrochroidae known worldwide, and about 20 species in Japan. Many species in this family, including the Pyrochroidea, have black bodies and only red elytra. 甲虫目アカハネムシ科の昆虫(イラスト)。体長12~17mm。北海道,本州,四国,九州のほか,千島,サハリンなどにも分布する。北海道や本州東北部を除いて,おもに山地の森林に生息する。5月ごろから出現し,夏の間,森林の葉上や倒木上に見られる。アカハネムシ科Pyrochroidaeは世界から100種余りが,日本からも20種ほどが知られている。アカハネムシを含めて,この科には上翅のみが赤色で,体が黒色のものが少なくない。
