This boys' magazine was first published in 1889 by Takahashi Shozo's Gakureikan. It was initially published monthly, but was published twice a month from the first anniversary issue. Along with the earlier publications Shonen-en (1888-95, editor-in-chief Yamagata Teisaburo) and Nihon no Shonen (1889-94, published by Hakubunkan), and the later Shonen Bunbu (1890-92, edited and published by Nakagawa Kashiro), it was one of the leading boys' magazines of the 1880s. It gained elementary school readers with its simple articles and illustrations on subjects such as ethics, history, literature, and entertainment. Edited by Ishii Kendo, it had a circulation of 15,000 at its peak, but was ordered to cease publication with the September 1895 issue and was discontinued.
