A task or project undertaken by multiple people working together. When specifically referring to joint work, it is called moyai shigoto. It is not joint work in which labor is provided or exchanged, but rather involves pooling labor to carry out an independent task or project, such as working together to cultivate wasteland or plant trees in the mountains. It also carries the meaning of distributing the fruits equally. Until recently, moyai was popular in fishing. In particular, much of beach seine fishing was moyai. Japan's traditional joint work included tetsudai (help), in which labor was provided unilaterally, yui (tie), in which labor was exchanged, and this moyai, of which moyai is the most communal of the three.
