A general term for birds of the woodpecker family, excluding the wryneck. The Japanese names of woodpeckers in Japan are made up of a word describing the characteristics of the species followed by the suffix "kera", such as Akagera (red woodpecker) (illustration) and Aogera (blue woodpecker) (illustration). It is also used as the Japanese name for birds that resemble woodpeckers in appearance and habits, for example the Eurasian parakeet, named after the fact that the shaft of its tail feathers is as hard as that of a woodpecker. アリスイ類を除いたキツツキ科の鳥の総称。日本産のキツツキ類の和名は,アカゲラ(赤啄木鳥)(イラスト)とかアオゲラ(青啄木鳥)(イラスト)とかのように,その種の特徴を表した語の後に,語尾としてケラがつけられている。また,キツツキ類に形態や習性の似ている鳥の和名にも用いられ,例えばケラインコは尾羽の羽軸がキツツキのようにかたいことから名付けられている。【斎藤 隆史】
