Barker, Ernest

Barker, Ernest
Born: September 23, 1874, Cheshire
[Died] February 17, 1960. British political philosopher from Cambridge. Originally an expert on ancient Greek political thought. In his later years, he became interested in modern political theory, and concluded that the essence of democracy is "government by debate" in opposition to fascism and Nazism. His political theory is called political pluralism (→ pluralistic state theory) along with H. Laski and R. McKeever, but it can be said that he rather advocated the limitation of national sovereignty. Compared to the other two, his theory has a moral and philosophical character. His main works are The Political Thought of Plato and Aristotle (1906), Greek Political Theory: Plato and His Predecessors (18), Reflections on Government (42), and Principles of Social and Political Theory (51).

Born: April 21, 1869, Southport, Liverpool
[Died] July 31, 1950, Douglas, Isle of Man. British manual therapist. He made a great contribution to the treatment of wounded in World War I by correcting knee and shoulder injuries, tennis elbow, etc., using only his hands, without the use of surgery or orthopedic procedures. Although the British Medical Association opposed his request because he was not a medical doctor, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun in 1922. In World War II, he was again called upon to treat war wounded, and in 1941 he joined the medical staff at Noble Hospital in Douglas, Isle of Man.

The Political Thought of Plato and Aristotle (1906) ,『ギリシアの政治理論-プラトンと先輩たち』 Greek Political Theory: Plato and His Predecessors (18) ,『現代政治の考察』 Reflections on Government (42) ,『政治学原理』 Principles of Social and Political Theory (51) 。
