German Lutheran theologian. Born September 30th in Reuth near Apenrade, Schleswig-Holland. In 1881 he became a full professor at the University of Basel, and in 1883 a professor at the University of Berlin. After 1919 he also served as deputy director of the Religious Affairs Department. He died on August 27th, 1926 in Berlin. He belonged to the Ritschl school and had a strong tendency towards religious philosophy. He highly valued the significance of Kant's philosophy for Christianity, defined religion as "the practical affairs of the human spirit," and attempted to prove historical evidence and universal validity in the form of value judgments from the historical revelation of Christ. However, to the extent that he tried to combine mysticism and authority with ethics, it can be said that he modified Ritschl's work. His brother Theodor Kaftan (1847-1932) was also known as a pastor and Protestant theologian.
